The Anti-Saloon League
In 1893, the Anti-Saloon League joined the temperance movement and began to press for the abolition of saloons,
a public place where alcohol can be bought and drunk. Under the leadership of Wayne Wheeler, the ASL became the most successful single issue lobbying organization in American history, with the goal to pass a constitutional amendment that would ban the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcohol. By1917 the ASL had accomplished the passage of the 18th Amendment through Congress. Within two years the amendment became law, with the ratification of every state except Connecticut and Rhode Island.
